A finance calculator is only worth using if you can find out what it assumes. This page sets out where the formulas come from, how the worked examples are verified, and what we will not publish.
Every calculator implements a published, checkable method rather than an in-house approximation. Loan and mortgage payments use the standard amortisation formula that lenders use, so the schedule reconciles against a bank's own statement. Calorie and BMR tools use Mifflin-St Jeor, named on the page so you can look up its error bars. Income tax tools follow the official slab and rebate structure of the jurisdiction in question, not a smoothed approximation of it.
Where a rule has a detail that most implementations skip, we implement the detail and say so. The advance tax calculator applies Rule 119A, which requires the amount interest is charged on to be rounded down to the nearest ₹100 — a rounding that is negligible on a large shortfall and decisive on a small one. It also treats the 12% and 36% figures attached to the first two instalments as tolerance triggers rather than as the base, because that is what section 234C says: clear 12% by 15 June and no interest arises, miss it by a rupee and interest runs on the shortfall from 15%. Calculators that treat 12% as the base quietly understate the bill.
Every number in an article or an FAQ that claims to be a result — "a ₹18 lakh package pays ₹1,18,126 a month", "being ₹100 short on 15 September costs ₹1,083" — is produced by running the site's own calculator and reading the output, never by estimating it while writing.
This is a rule with a history behind it. Hand-written examples drifted from what the tools actually computed more than once, and a guide whose arithmetic disagrees with the calculator sitting next to it is worse than one with no example at all, because the reader cannot tell which of the two is broken. Examples and tools are now checked against each other before anything is published.
Every model simplifies. The ones that matter are named in plain sight on the calculator itself, not in a footnote:
Articles are written against events that are already on a published calendar — a rate decision, a filing deadline, a scheme that closes on a known date — rather than to a publishing frequency.
That is a deliberate choice, and it rules out the most common format in finance publishing. We do not run a daily or weekly market recap. Reuters, Bloomberg and Moneycontrol publish one within minutes of the close, ours would add nothing to it, and a year of them would leave several hundred thin dated pages behind. We tried the format, published five editions, and stopped rather than let it limp on. Where a subject has a stable answer, it gets one page that is updated when the facts change, not a new dated page each time.
Some of what is on this site is a standard formula presented clearly, and we do not pretend otherwise — an amortisation schedule is an amortisation schedule. The pieces we would point to as original are the ones where the answer had to be computed because nobody had published it:
If a calculation here is wrong, we want to know, and the contact page explains what to include so it can be reproduced quickly. A confirmed calculation error is fixed as a priority over anything else in progress.
Substantive corrections are made on the page itself and the page's last-updated date moves. We do not silently edit a figure and leave the old date in place, and we do not delete a page to make a mistake disappear.

Salary, loan balance, medical figures — none of it is transmitted to a server, logged, or stored, because there is no server-side calculation to send it to. That is an architectural fact rather than a promise about our conduct: there is no database of user inputs to leak, sell or subpoena, because one was never built.
